1920's - 1970's
Music videos have developed from the 1920's when producers created Talkies, soundies and short's. When talkies were created many musical short films were produced these were an important precursor to the music video and consequently some of the most renowned music videos have themed or copied musical films in their music videos like: Madonna's "Material Girl" was anreenactment of Marilyn Monroe's "Diamond's are a girls best friend" from the film Gentlemen prefer Blondes.
An example of a simple and basic start to creating a music video would be Bob Dylan's 1960's video "Subterranean Homesick Blues". In this he is in an alley holding up cards with the lyrics of the song and that was the it for the rest of the video no editing or effects. Around this time t.v music programs were popular, they showed performances that were live and mimed, chart based music videos, films, "Top of the Pops". Top of the Pops was a long running popular British t.v show began playing music in the 1970's.
A development of the basic music video was The Beatles "Strawberry Fields Forever" in 1962. Their promotional video which later became known as a music video included reverse film effect, stop motion animation, jump-cuts from daytime to night-time, and The Beatles playing and later pouring paint over an upright piano. During this time as well the first constructed band were created The Monkee they went on to have their own t.v show.
As well as the hit program Top of the Pops and the start of the "punk" era the 1970's also contained it's first free music video which was Queen's "Bohemain Rapsody". This video contained shots of the whole band as well as singular shots of each band member faded on and off of backgrounds.
