We have looked at Ed Sheeran's You Need Me But I Don't Need You music video and we then annotated his lyrics. We did this to look at the meaning of his lyrics in depth as well as linking the content of his video. As we annotated the lyrics we looked at how he made a point of not being a manufactured artist as he writes and performs his own songs. He also links a lot of current social and cultural topics like going to the well known performing arts Brit School and the message is that he is where he is through pure talent. Lyrics:
The
introduction of the video starts with Ed playing the guitar to show
performance, it’s in black and white which links to the lyrics about being
simple and not complicated. He also features throughout the video through quick
cutaway shots playing his guitar and this would relate to the lyrics later on
when he states he writes his own music.
I have chosen Ellie Goulding's Figure 8 as the editing and effects I found really interesting. She uses variety of shots like, extreme close-ups, close-ups, mid shots. I particularly like the beginning when she is walking across the floor and the shot is upside down as well as reversed, it is then flipped to the right way round but continuing to be reversed as well as looking like she is walking forwards. I thought this was effective as it fits with the narrative as well as the lyrics. I also think that a particular movement from one shot to another was a good effect this was when she was whipping her hair round on the bed and the transition to the next shot where she is on a chair and completes the whip. I think I am going to attempt this movement similarly in my Music Video Promo. She also uses a prop which recurs in most shots; a red piece of cloth which could symbolise the lyrics and link to the narrative.
Christina Aguilera's Ain't No Other Man is one of my inspirational videos due to her incorporation of 1930's and 1940's musical styles as well as setting it as the 20's/30's era. I thought that this was a memorable and appealing video, which proved effective and attractive to her target audience. She states in the narrative an alter ego Baby Jane, a few artists like Nicki Minaj create alter ego's for there video's it seems to create another level for the audience. This video also includes band shots but in the "20's club" this effectively completed the 20's/30's theme.
Eminem's Without Me video I remembered as it's editing and animation features a number of scenarios built around its context. This included Eminem and Dr. Dre as parodies of comics in general, specifically Batman, Robin and Blade trying to save a child who bought a copy of The Eminem Show that has a Parental Advisory sticker. The animation stood out for me as it was entertaining and different from other videos similar. It's inspired me to think about perhaps using animation or an element of it in my Music promo as it could help complete it. features a number of scenarios built around its context. Ideas: We liked the idea of themeing our prelim around the night sky and stars, so we decided we would continue that theme through the costume. The Tutu I own looks similar (when on) to a stereotypical "star" and thought it was also appropriate with the ballet theme. We also tried to incorporate the lyrics to make a narrational video like on the word "lightning" there would be a shot of the girl doing the splits to symbolise lightning.
Final Product:
Ellie Goulding's Starry Eyed
Inspiration:
We looked at Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights video as we liked the effects of the lights and the various camera angles and shot types. As well as the use of the lighting and how simple looks just as effective.
We also wanted to include elements of Ellie Goulding's Lights video, as the effects I thought were relevant to our prelim as well as a challenge to work out how we could do it.
